I. Policy Statement

Faculty, staff, and students may use the University's approved names, logos, and/or other Trademarked Material where necessary to identify themselves on matters of official University business. All such uses must follow this policy and the visual identity guidelines set forth in The Catholic University of America Style and Visual Identity Guide. Note that use of the University Seal is not permitted except by specifically-designated University officials.

II. Definitions

A. Trademarked Material means words, names, symbols or logos, domain names, trade dress, and slogans or any combination of words which have been adopted by the University to identify itself and to distinguish itself and its sponsorship from others, and which are used in any format including electronic. Examples include usage on apparel; print publications; souvenirs such as glasses, cups, key chains and the like.

B. University Seal means the round University emblem, often embossed or stamped, that bears the University shield in the center and the University name in the outer circumference. Use of the University Seal is limited to specifically-designated University officials such as the Board of Trustees, the President, and the Registrar for purposes of authenticating official University documents, such as diplomas.

III. Policy

Faculty, staff, and students may use the University's approved names, logos, and/or other marks where necessary to identify themselves on matters of official University business. All such uses must follow this policy and the visual identity guidelines set forth in The Catholic University of America Style and Visual Identity Guide. Only specifically-designated University officials may use the University Seal for the purposes of authenticating official University documents. No other use of the seal is permitted.

Use of the University name for private purposes is limited to use purely for identification by a current or former member of the faculty, staff, and/or student body (e.g. "Jane Doe, Professor of Music, The Catholic University of America," or "John Doe, Class of '79, CUA"). Catholic University names, logos, and other marks shall not be used by individuals or entities otherwise in a manner that implies University endorsement or responsibility for particular activities, products, or publications involved, or by any individual or group promoting itself, without the express written permission of the Vice President for University Relations and Chief of Staff or his/her designee.

The University's name, coat of arms, seal and certain other marks are trademark protected. Any and all use of the University names, logos, and/or other marks for commercial purposes is prohibited unless approved by the Office of Marketing and Communications.
